Fight Breast and Prostate Cancer with Beer

Many people finish a hard day with a glass of wine when they come home but instead of opening that bottle of wine, it may be a better idea to have a glass of beer instead.

Recent studies by scientists from the German Cancer Center have shown that one of the main reasons why people should start looking at beer in a more positive light is because, beer has a molecule called Xanthohumol that has been proven to help protect the average person against breast and other forms of cancer.

How It Works

Xanthohumol is found in hops and it helps fight cancer because it inhibits testosterone and blocks the body’s release of PSA, a protein that has been proven to encourage the spread of cancer in the body.
The health benefits of beer have been known for years but only recently have scientists been able to identify which elements in hops work to help someone from getting cancer.
Clarissa Gerhauser a scientist from the Heidelberg Centre said “’Research is still early but in trials we hope to further demonstrate that xanthohumol actively prevents prostate cancer development.” Mrs. Gerhauser hopes that one day Xanthohumol will be developed into an effective drug to help fight cancer around the world.

The Big Question

If you’re a beer lover or you just enjoy the occasional german beer, the question on your mind most likely is which beers have Xanthohumol? Since every beer is made with different ingredients you won’t be able to find the same level of hops in one that you will in the other.

The beers that have been proven to have the highest level of hops are good old fashioned ales like Samuel Adams Boston Lager or any other commercially available ale that you can find on sale at your local liquor store or on tap at your favorite bar.
